Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
Mushoku Tensei is a fun read with great characters, great world building, and breaks typical manga norms and story moulds in a mostly good way. While there are many good things about this story, it also suffers from horrible plot progression.

The characters are great. Without getting into spoilers, many of them are memorable and go through real trials that are relatable. The biggest thing of all, that so many stories fail to deliver on, is real actual meaningful progress, in personalities, attitude, and capabilities, this manga does that well. Overall it is very enjoyable to watch these characters and follow their growth.

With one one good point down, let's talk about the bad. The most frustrating thing about this manga is the amount of time spent doing things that have very little to nothing to do with moving the plot forward. It can be a good thing to take a small chapter break or two here and there for some extra world building or character development that has nothing to do with the plot, but when close to 50% of all the chapters are side missions and stories that don't actually move the main plot forward that we began the story with, it is bad.

Another thing that is a bit off putting is the pedophilia vibes that are common early on. I don't believe the bad of reality should be removed from stories, in fact it can be a great story element when handled properly. With that said, the story doesn't necessarily handle it properly and it is a bit cringe at times.

Back to good elements. It is hard to find good fantasy and action stories that also include strong romance elements, this is one of those stories. The story doesn't shy away from romance like other manga with the infuriating clueless characters. Not only does it embrace romance interests between characters but it isn't scared to take those elements past beginning stages.

There is a lot of world building with cool races, political systems, history and much more that really immerse the reader in the world. Power scaling in the series is done well so far, from the beginning we were introduced to levels of power and the characters are slowly climbing that stationary ladder, the ladder isn't being changed and added to on the fly to meet story needs as you see in a lot of action stories.

Overall a very enjoyable series, could be a 9 or 10 from me if the story was better at cutting useless content and focusing more on plot progression.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
I'm gonna start this off by stating that I have not read the Light Novel. I wanted to read this as a standalone work, seeing how well the manga fairs without the precognition that reading its source material brings. So, for all those who are repping the LN and such, this review will not go into that territory. I am reviewing this manga on its own as if it were a standalone work.

I think one of the draws of a basic isekai story, is a power fantasy. As someone who will never experience these sorts of things, it's a fun way to escape reality, with the MC cast as the perfect stand-in for yourself. This is the first point at which Mushoku Tensei (MT from here on out), differs. It openly challenges the stereotypical "first step", so to say, of an isekai. Besides truck-kun, the manga and LN both diverge in its open negative portrayal of NEETs and Shut-ins, predominantly using this negative connotation as a factor for character development.

I tend to measure how well manga are written by the ability to entertain. As with any media form, the only way to succeed is to create a dedicated audience. I think that MT does this in a number of different ways. Firstly, the strength of this manga comes from, generally speaking, the characters. They're real people, with real emotions, flaws, and personalities. They're human in a way in which many isekai characters are not. Eris has to grapple with her own insecurities. Rudeus is dealing with the trauma created by his previous lifestyle. Paul is a womanizer, and an alcoholic. Roxy has family issues and an apparent hard-on for 10-year-old Rudeus (that one isn't a problem in the manga but still). While having blank-slate characters is all well and good, characters that are human build investment. The blank characters simply fall flat when compared to the way the manga is able to create human characters. Their choices may not be the right ones. Their choices may be stupid given our omnipotent presence and obviously superior judgement skills (I know we all feel that way). But, they are believable. They are never out-of-character, their decisions feel natural and flow from the heart, as opposed to the plot. This is what MT does so well. It builds investment in its characters, where most of us can't actively empathize with the solution Rudeus is in. Most of us don't live that life, but, we can understand where he's coming from, and that's what makes us care. We want to see these characters happy, and we want them to achieve the goals they want, even though they may not be our goals, because we UNDERSTAND. I think beyond the general plot, and the basic art style, this is what fuels viewership of this manga.

Speaking of which, let's talk for a bit about story and art. The story itself is fairly standard fare until the big white happens. It's classic OP anime character shenanigans, intelligence and all, and while the character is set up to be powerful, he's not the complete balls to the wall BAMF that some other isekai use (~ahem~ In another world with my smartphone ~ahem~). The first ~20 chapters establish a couple of key things. Firstly, his power level, secondly, his relationships with the characters around him, and finally, what his goal is (more or less). Then, as obviously the big phenomenon happens, everything is bent out of shape. This is where the story actually picks up. It's a very unusual concept, certainly original, and interesting, The gripe I have with the story and why it scores lower than the characters, is due to one flaw. The pacing. It's all over the place. This may be something the LN does better, but I had no concept of time while reading it. I will simply follow along on their adventures, and boom, 3 YEARS HAVE PASSED. I had to rely on the text telling me how much time had passed because to me, the events happening feel like a number of days, while in reality it's been months. The story does a poor job of knowing when time speeds up and slows down, and thus, signposting was the only way I could understand any of this. The art is good. The characters are unique and diverse-looking, generally, it was inoffensive, and was pretty great during certain scenes. Especially emotion, as the art of Eris crying did very much remind me of DomeXKano, and we all know what a minefield of mixed emotions that manga drives you through. I think the art does genuinely do the job and shines in a few places.

In the end, I thought it was a very good story weighed down by shotgun pacing, the art was very good, if not particularly genius, and very human characters. The investment in its characters, the genuine danger the plot drives them through, and the unconventional story combine for a very enjoyable anime I would recommend to fans of the isekai genre.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
Until now I've never had the pleasure of reading such a wonderfully crafted story with equally well rounded and lovable characters. The world building is fantastic and carries with it magnitude by how it effects the main characters, which I've found lacking in other stories in the Isekai genre.
Moreover, the art really compliments the character's personality. While it may not be the most stylized, it really is pleasing to the eye. Character development in this story is something I've adored from the beginning, and no other manga has immersed me so deeply into the lives and emotional troubles of its characters, nor has any manga brought out such a multitude of emotions. I'm talking amusement, disgust, joy, worry, discomfort, and relatability, and everything that may fall in between.
Overall I rated this manga a 10 because I truly adore its characters and believe their development in regards to the world and circumstances they are brought up in is superb, and has deeply touched me in some moments. I hope this short ramble can entice you to give this manga a shot and hopefully it will bring as much joy and entertainment to you as it did to me.

Regarding the ecchi tag, there are certainly some uncomfortable imagery if you dislike lolis/teens, but if you can look past your own age I am positive you can see the in-story relationships for they are.

TLDR
Story: Great world building and good pacing.
Art: Very pleasant and well done, if not somewhat generic.
Characters: Equally as lovable and hate-able. Great development overall.
Enjoyment: One of my all-time favorites, and eagerly awaiting more chapters.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
There is something, yet feels like nothing and yet I still want more

Thats my basic impression to this series. I want to like it a lot, but there are too many things that push it for me perfect or even good.Yet it demands you to continue.

Mushoku Tensei is one of the newest entries into the fantast seriesthat has become a nice niche for me. However unlike other titles that had their own charms ( Dungeon Meshi or Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) with only minor hiccups, these one seems to match its sense of enjoyment with its sense of revulsion.

The main story is about a 34 Neet person, who after losing his parents and regarded by his peers as garbage, is killed off saving some people and reincarneted as a young child in a fantasy setting to his pleasure.

And thats itself points the charm and flaws of the premise. The MC has his memory of his past live ( a disguisting , perverted ,shameless person) put in the position of his own benefits. He is a miracle kid who has situations and outcomes make him great with him being the greast mage and swordfight er progidy., and as such comes of as obnoxious. The boy literally learns everything perfectly but just putting his mind to it. No process , no win/loss scenario .Just perfect Miracle kid.And the fact that manga keeps shoving into my face that he is in fact a 34 year old man in a 6 year old kid's body

The fan service comes of as repugnant as well with the MC moments with his mother, his best friend , his tutor, his cousin, his aunt . At the story shows that he gets it from his father, who cheated on his wife with a maid and the manga asks us to accept it.

And even though I should hate that in the manga, there are still moments of positive with the book like his " Taming of the Shrew" arc with his cousin. Even the art is too good for this sort of thing, with beautiful designs and images.

I wanted to like this book but at the same time I dont want to like it either. It feels like To Love Ru if the MC is a scumbag with the best luck in the world.Yet it is deeper than any harem comics has any need to be.

While I still continue to read it to see how it goes (Its adapted from a best seller visual novel, WTH?), I would not recommend this to any fan of fantasy. Only touch this it would you can keep your sanity in check

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
Finally decided to write a review on this in celebration of the anticipated anime announcement.

The isekai, which original material(light novel) is said to be the start if the genre itself, the king that gave birth to all of the majority of shitty isekais you see every new season.

Isekai, shut-in, shunned by his own family, all his friends left him though some tried to help but ultimately failed, having dropped to the lowest point that a person could possibly get. Until the arrival of truck-kun, whom gave him a one way ticket to another world.

Being born/reincarnated to a couple of adventurers as Rudeus Greyrat with all of the memories from his previous life still intact, swore to live his new life to the fullest with no regrets and not making the same mistakes again he once made before.

By far, one of the most impressive things about this title is that it gets right is character development. Take our protagonist as an example, from being a person that was despised by his family, didn't even attend his father's funeral to a individual that is loved by his friends, piers and family members. Self-aware, humble and extremely perverted. Yeah... Although there are moments when he gets inappropriately horny, perverted but he still has his extends. A person that is willing do things that many would not even imagine if his family or friends were to be in danger. But he's a fundamentally kind person in nature, just overloaded on the pervy side.

Another thing that I find favourable is the Rudeus's power level. It's pretty much a given that he is strong from the get-go since he's the face of the series but there's a difference from other isekai protagonists. It's that he doesn't have any ridiculous cheats or skills, all of his power is earned from sheer hard work and determination. Strong, yes. But that doesn't mean there aren't stronger characters in the manga that could literally kill him in one shot.

The art itself is pretty impressive on it's own, a little bit rough in the few beginning chapters but eventually gets better since the artist is somewhat new(?) to the industry.

This could've gotten a full score if it weren't for the fact that it skips scenes and information from the source material. And it is not in a small amount, from the details on literally everything(an entire volume for god sake).

Mushoku Tensei is one of the few manga where I look foward to each release. I highly recommend reading the manga and if interested then you should give the light novel/web novel(both completed) a try to fill in the blanks on certain events that happens in the story.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
the isekai genre is a big guilty pleasure of mine.
i like the general concept of cultural and technological juxtaposition observed from the protagonist's POV in a fantasy world, be it played straight and/or for satirical and parodic intent.
this... isn't to say i actually enjoy most of the stories i come across. this manga is a prime example of that, in one of the worst ways possible.

[minor spoilers, if you actually want to read this story]

---

this story follows the common isekai trend of "i-died-and-got-mysteriously-reincarnated-but-i-don't-really-miss-my-old-life-because-damn-all-these-girls-are-super-hot", which to be fair, isn't as much as an issue because of the protagonist's past life. rudeus, our protagonist, was shown as a miserable, depressed 40-year-old hikikomori NEET; he had little to nones positive experiences or aspects in his old life, so it's understandable for his fear of certain social interactions and becoming a 'loser' again.

which would usually be a nice spin on the common isekai protagonist, if not for the fact rudeus never changed and is still a pathetic, otaku loser even in his new life.

you would think that upon realizing he has a new chance at a better life, he wouldn't follow the same path as his old self and be an absolute creep, but uh.....yeah no, the first thing this guy does upon realizing he's a baby is get a boner over his mom's tits.

which i can't really judge as much since i would honestly do the exact same in that moment, but any reliability is lost when common sense kicks in and you once again get reminded this guy is only in the body of a child, and is still very much a grown ass adult man.

because even if his instant internal reaction of "a loli magician is here-!!!" to his seeing his quintessential isekai magical-cute-girl-tutor wasn't quite bad enough, he apparently:

* befriends a human/elf/beast hybrid girl he mistakes for a "super beautiful pretty boy", and internally comments for his newfound friend to stop looking at him cutely before he "discovers a new world of shotacons"

* steals a pair of underwear from his magical-cute-girl-tutor, which he literally worships and refers to as his god (this is brought up multiple times and develops into literal worship obsession)

* listens in on his father blackmailing the family maid into sexual acts, and only brings this up during the time it's revealed said maid is pregnant with his half-sibling. the main reason why he brings this up? because said maid "did him a favor" when she found the previously mentioned stolen underwear and ignored it (to add salt to the wound, the maid used to adventure with his father until he was outright stated to have raped her one night in their travels)

* spies and listens in on his parents having sex (and hopes they "hurry up and give [him] an imouto")

among very, very many other things. and this is all just before he actually leaves his childhood home to visit and live with his other relatives, which brings up his "ojou-sama submission strategy" for "taming" the essential violent cute tsundere girl...who is his cousin. who he also, on multiple times, fantasizes and engages with in a sexual manner.

sometimes you can kind of forget all of this is the basis of his character when a dramatic or emotional event takes place, but then the sudden realization of what the actual dynamic at hand is rears it's ugly head. i find the best example of this is chapters 34-36, wherein rudeus has a particularly harsh confrontation and reunion with his alcoholic, lecherous father.

this character arc actually got to me at first, due in part to not only how the artist for this series actually isn't that bad and put obvious effort into evoking the emotions and feelings of key scenes, but also how the literal best character in the whole story, Geese, briefly sums up this entire arc in one line: "you expect too much of an 11-year-old child."

and it's also with this line you realize rudeus isn't an actual 11-year-old, but a 40-year-old grown man INSIDE a 11-year-old's body. which, again, isn't really great in hindsight, and also just sorta ruined the entire point of the situation at hand. good job with that one, guys.

but hey, the novel is apparently way better and actually explains things- oh wait, but the manga is...based off the novel, so does that mean the novel is worse? well apparently it is, considering rudeus actually DID worship the underwear he stole from his magical-cute-girl-tutor.

this dude made a legitimate religion entirely focused on his magic tutor, his cousin and his hybrid childhood friend...all of whom he married and had multiple children with. these three are referenced in his religion as the goddess of wisdom, the goddess of war and the goddess of love, and their "holy relics" are literally kept in his basement for who even knows what reason.

so what are these holy relics? the previously mentioned underwear of his tutor, a wooden sword representing his cousin (her underwear is included as well, go figure) and...the blood-stained sheets from when his hybrid childhood friend gave him her virginity.

......so that's a thing, i guess?

now is there any actual enjoyment to be found in this series? well, if one handful of side characters actually being decent counts, then yes. the previously mentioned best of these characters, Geese, is easily the only reason you should actually read this, if only to know that the author can make a character the audience can genuinely like and grow attached to.

---

TL;DR i expect nothing, and i'm still let down.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
Development:

An Isekai... Yes, we're already crowded of all kinds and I also know that in most cases it's cliché and repetition of other subjects already covered, but what makes this work unique?

We've already started the work by seeing the death of a 34-year-old run over neet when he was trying to save a stranger on the street and reincarnate in a baby in a world of fantasy and magic. Having this new life in hand and possessing great intelligence and power, now he tries not to repeat his past life and tries to be someone better.

Despite this great power, he now not only deals with magic, but also with his relationship with other people and a new world.

Script:

It is not an isekai that abuses the formula "super powerful character", we can see the growth of the main character, his relationship with other people, how these same people can be friendly, but at the same time perverse, disgusting, perverted and manipulative, as the world is cruel and overwhelming. What makes the work unique is that even if the character has great powers, this does not help at all since there are much more powerful beings. Which yields distressing scenes and conflicting events.

The work demonstrates in a splendid and overwhelming way that even though you have been reborn as a powerful being, you are still a nobody and it only yields to you to change that.

Art:

A simple art that knows how to balance the beautiful and the heavy. We can feel the emotions through every trace. Backgrounds and cities are always very well designed, games of light and shadow are well used in serious scenes and softened in comic scenes.

Moreover, we can see time passing by and each character aging, thus following the steps of psychological growth of the character.

Summary:

A work that makes you forget that it is Isekai, in fact it seems that the author of the work wants to distance himself from that, since the characters are so well worked, the conflicts and the events are so striking that make the isekai theme desapear. I can say that as I've been reading it I realize that "Isekai" has been used more as an excuse to attract the public to a very well written and elaborate story.

With that in mind, I strongly recommend this work if you like more High Fantasy themes with a more serious and conflicting story, with great characters and full of personal and intra-personal development.

For me, one of the best works I have ever read in my life!

Final note: 9/10

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
Hoping reading this review helps you decide if you want to pick this one up into your list. Stumbling upon this manga and finding if its worthy of your time, you'll be the judge of that.

!!THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!!

The first thing that bothers me was the art style but after reading few chapters, I realize that the art style gradually improve, the clean finished panels and astonishing background scenery, and most of all the appealing characters designs. Every panels has its points explain what is the situation so that the readers emphasize more with the characters thoughts and actions. It maybe has its flaws showing time to time but that flaws is overshadowed with the characters expression showing their emotions the overwhelming cuteness and its steady and slow storyline.

The characters of this manga has its flaws and bad decision making showing us that not all of us is perfect, not everyone can do things like other can do but through hard work and determination to achieve a certain goal is what the heart of every character of this manga, at least that was my understanding of the author of the light novel depict and the artist of the manga clearly understand the thought process of the author. Notable character development from the start is the Greyrat family, specifically Rudeus (Rudy) family. Starting from new born baby that has a mind of a 40 plus years old reborn in this new vast world, showing potential to be extraordinary with magic and later has the battle senesce of a swordsman taught by Paul Greyrat (Rudy's Father) and further on the story Rudy continue to refine his knowledge swordsman ship taught by Ghyslaine Dedorudia (Paul's friend and former party member). Rudy regrets that lingers in his previous past life, he uses that not as to hinder him self but to fuel his desire to live to the fullest and no second guessing every decision that he made and to protect that is dear to him. While reading the first few chapters, the time Zenith Greyrat (Rudy's Mother) is pregnant with a child and discover that the Lilia Greyrat head maid of the family is also pregnant with a child, that Paul undeniable commit an unforgivable act. Zenith has some thoughts and quickly forgive Lilia because of their strong relationship and later on forgive Paul of his act. Rudy heavily protest his opinion that Lilia should stay and because of that Lilia shares the end of her story to Rudy and shows gratitude and soon to be child to serve as well undying loyalty. Rudy's previous life, reminded him about his family are in shambles and did nothing about the situation and thought now he has the resolve to change all of that in his current life. Later on the story Rudy has two sisters, Zenith child Norn Greyrat and Lilia's child Aisha Greyrat, with that I'm really attached to Aisha character development, showing her inferiority complex that she is not love by her father because she is not the legitimate daughter. She hides her jealousy of Norn and slowly filling her heart full of doubts that she is not love causing more insecurity. Later she knows that she has a half older brother but she did not know what kind of person he is, now she reluctant to serve that person she barely knows and thus discipline by Lilia. In the later arc, all of the people on the country was teleport in deferent area in the world so Rudy's family. Rudy did find Paul and her little sister Norn. One day the mysterious god appears in Rudy's vision and tip him whereabout of Lilia and Aisha and discover Aisha inferiority complex, now determine to make his family happy. While reading through that arc, my tears slowly shed because I deeply feel Aisha feelings not because I encounter the same lifestyle but how the author convey that feelings through character developments. That kind of story telling helps the character development to the point carries a heavy influence to the reader, for me that is a one of the strong point of this manga.

The relations ship of Rudy between 3 other girls is one I specially like. I'm not fond with harem, tends to ruin the flow of the over all felling of the manga but this is deferent, adds a good change of atmosphere to the story and keeps the reader want more of the relations ship development.

Rudy first love interest was Sylphiette "Sylphy" although he did not know that she was a girl at first because Sylphy did not tell him she was a girl. Later on the story Sylphy was teleported in a deferent country and temporarily lost her memories while hiding her identity. The development of their relationship will blossom in the Magic Academy Arc. The hide and seek relations ship between those two is a thing of beauty, the shyness of Sylphy when their alone is so adorable. Rudy second love interest is Eris Boreas "Mad Dog, Mad Sword King" Greyrat, at first the two of them didn't like each other but one day a tragic and miscalculated incident deepen the bond between the two youngster. The two of them have a really good character development because the two of them grow up together. Learning swordsman ship is Eris strong point while taking magic lesson from Rudy, one of the tutor Eris to be a respectable woman when she grow up. Every thing Rudy self knowledge helps him tutor Eris to the fullest and earn the respect of the head of the family that is Sauros Boreas Greyrat, Eris grandfather. Their relations ship deepens even more after the Teleportation incident, Rudy vow to protect Eris putting his life on the line. This arc show how deeply the bond between those two, Eris showing her adorable cute side to Rudy while in the journey together with their companions. That kind of deepen bond really stick to you and that's one of the reason I keep reading and patiently waiting for the next volume. I don't quite like that Rudy has an adult mind and having relation ship with the two young girls, bother me a lot then again this is a deferent world. The last love interest is Roxy Migurdia, I put her on last because of the relationship between this two are not quite deepen more for this current volume. The current relation ship between this two are Student and Master to Goddess and love interest (Rudy "Student" - Roxy "Master" etc.). The development between this two are quite complicated because of the one sided love and the respectable teacher. This kind of development fun to read and exiting to simulate what will happen between the two of them.

My overall thoughts, the manga is really enjoyable to read but some of the moral questions are questionable, still entertaining. I did enjoy reading every chapter, shows you how vulnerable the character is, that's how I like my manga full of emotion and sweetness with a pinch of salt.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
i dont recommend reading the manga. read the novel, light novel or web novel. wb is fully translated.
but anyways, first thing is how the manga pushes about 25 books into a couple chaptes, and by doing this, skips alot of IMPORTANT details. the other part is the atmosphere, the wb successfully made a serious, dramatic comedy. and introduced the plot and foreshadowing perfectly, while the manga is kinda like, "how d'ya like this arc... what about this?". the manga is more comic and just less serious. also, i dont like the art. the manga is much mroe full of cliches and stereotypes of the like, but the mushoku tensei novel is very famous for standing out. the mc always tries to hide the bad stuff, that is what makes his character, but here its like they REALLY want you to see that he is able to get sad. the manga is really cencored compared to the novel, in a way that kind of ruins the characters, cause the novel uses sexual themes as en element in comedy and drama, but the manga is more censored.

in the novel, you're really experiencing the mc's thought and actions, and you grow more attached to him, the same with the otehr characters, but in the manga, its super generic. an example: you skip the part where he learned the rare "chantless incantacion" in the manga, and they just show you how talanted he is... but in the novel, he manages to do it by an accident. the manga is like a super shounen jump version the dark dramatic comedy known as mushoku tensei. the manga kind of just makes mushoku tensei seem like pure fiction that is just funny and has a good plot, but it really ruins the potentiall mushoku tensei originally has. read the novel instead.

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu review
I’ve read “Mushoku Tensei - Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu” a number of times over the years, and been aware of it since it first started being translated into English. I even gave the novel a read once and was mesmerised by how garbage it was (light novels, whether a feature of the translation or otherwise, unanimously have poor writing). Each time I’ve read “Mushoku…” I’ve come away with a different impression, and it’s likely due to the relative importance I’ve placed all it’s disparate elements in my mind. On one hand you have an engaging fantasy story with some good ideas and competent execution, on the other hand you have the sex based comedy which can be rather tedious1. Having just read the 68 chapters back to back, I think there is enough content now that the more irritating elements of “Mushoku…” don’t stick out as much.

Light Novels and their adaptations are extraordinarily inward looking – a pot-pourri of various ideas and themes, at this point of unknown origin because of how many light novels exist with similar qualities and their incestuous reverence. So no, if you are coming to “Mushoku…” for “originality” or “creativity” then you are looking in the wrong place2. But, if you are looking for a story that takes it’s story elements and gives them a decent amount of breathing room, and has a plot that is wide in scope with relevance for the inhabited world, then I think you should give “Mushoku…” a try. I primarily refer to the magical disaster arc here as I was impressed with ground covered and the credence given by the story that this event was a big fucking deal with a large impact on the world. We even get some powerful moments of emotion and character development, even if it does feel like it’s all subsumed to the goal of making the MC seem like the best thing since sliced bread. The setting does remain rather undeveloped, which may have been a requirement for having the characters travel across a continent in good time, but the author clearly has a mind for scenario and the branching impact of action (e.g. first entering the adventurers guild, reuniting with Paul, the parallel adventure of Roxxy etc…). This is all occurring on the backdrop of lore that is typical for a fantasy setting, and strangely convoluted at points, but still present enough that there is some suggestion as to where the plot could move forward. If someone could explain to me why “saint” is a lower tier of mastery then “emperor” that would also be appreciated lol…

My primary issue with “Mushoku…” at this point may be intimately linked with it being a light novel and thus, being a bit of a mixed bag. In the current arc, what on earth is going on? The tonal whiplash from dour fantasy adventure to whacky school high jinks has been palpable. I still can’t work out how seriously the MCs impotence is being taken by the story, which may be one of these things that just translates better in the novel itself. With the update speed, I do worry that “Mushoku…” will exhaust those that have a lesser interest in it’s comedic chops and want to see the resolution of the broader mysteries in the plot.

In conclusion, “Mushoku…” is decent. It lacks coherency, which may be part of it’s charm, and it’s very much an adaptation of a light novel (for all the good or ill that means to you). But when the story gets going it’s an enjoyable fantasy adventure with some quality scenario writing and snappy premise. Let’s just hope it’s ends within 10 years lol.

Find below my responses to comments made in other reviews. I didn’t want to bog down my opinion on the manga with broader points about criticism and fiction.

1. I find moral stargazing in fiction relatively tedious. While there are interesting debates surrounding this subject, and I believe that an opinion on a piece of media can be coloured by whatever side one lies on, most people do not have the ability/haven’t thought enough about said issue to really justify them fat thumbing their keyboard. Does the presence of a character who sexualises minors mean that said work condones real world sexual abuse of minors and is thus, immoral and possibly also illegal? Can context change this relationship or is it black and white? What is the readers and authors stake in this engagement? And so on with the bellyaching… I feel this is important to address because it seems to be one of the primary reasons for people reviewing this manga very negatively. Personally I find the MC gross in a great many ways, which is why on previous readings I’ve come away with a poor impression of this series, but I also think there is a lot to like once the pseudo-comedic sexual foliage has been raked away. I would also like to note for the puritans in the room that this manga is one of the few to actually represent a blossoming young romance and takes it from infatuation to “love-making” in the good old Christian sense. Yes, it’s “depicting minors” but it also has a sex cursed 1000 year old elf who apparently has some taste for pubescent boys and goes to magic school to get her fill of it... The main character also develops “incurable” impotence at 15 (?) years old after his perceived rejection… In the context of manga and anime at large, this is pretty standard for the harem/ecchi tags, if not relatively benign. If your problem is with this creepy 30 year old NEET being a pervert in his new 10 year old body (while being 40 mentally), then welcome to the club of people that have recognised this as being weird for all isekai protagonists since the beginning of time… Ultimately you can come down on any side of the issue you want, I just wish commenters would leave higher quality points about it, to at least show the capacity for thought.

2. “originality”, “innovation” and Deux-ex Machina… I mentioned this before but it is far too common for my liking that rather than attempt an explanation of perspective on a series, reviewers will commonly utilise nebulous and quite stupid criticisms and slogans that are community sanctioned. “Real reviewers talk about “character development”, “pacing” and “originality” so I will too!” without the recognition that many of these terms are completely meaningless without context, or possibly even down right dumb. After all, please find me a series that is totally “original” or “innovative”. To bring this to the relevant argument I’ve seen on this “Mushoku...” – was the magical disaster that brought about random teleportation of all characters in the story a plot device for an “adventure”? Was it valid to do so, or was it trite and cheap? Was Bilbo Baggins being the first name on Gandalfs mind in the Hobbit a plot device for adventure? Was it valid to be so, or was it trite and cheap? Ultimately your answer to this will depend, but I think laying it out in this way demonstrates just how asinine the question is in the first place, as any and all plot points could be seen as artificially created for the sake of making a compelling story. But when is it right and when is it wrong?
