Koe no Katachi review
Koe no Katachi sensitized me. It kept thinking about it during all the time I read it, and also after. I'll try to explain why this manga is so powerfull.

We follow Ishida Shouya in his quest for redemption, because in his childhood he bullied a deaf girl, Nishimiya Shouko, then being he himself bullied. Many would say he does not deserve forgiveness, but yet, he is trying his best to make up for the time he ruined for Shouko. This journey is just so relatable and credible because ,just like live itself, it has its ups and downs, its happy moments and its sad moments.

During Shouya's quest we face lots of diferents aspects of life. In the bullying theme, we get to see how lack of communication and comprehension, how jealousy and how the pressure of the society takes people to bully someone. Also its after-affects are greatly depicted. We see how bullying takes people to hate themselves and to devalue their own lives, to the point they wish to die. Nevertheless, many other themes are aboarded: we get to understand what real friends are and what gives one right to be friends with people; we get to see and understand family relations, like the love and protection between siblings and parents.

During the manga, Shouya tries to compensate for the time he ruined for Shouko. One of the ways he does that is by reintroduncing her to some of their childhood classmates, who she could have been friends with, if not for his actions, and by trying to get her to participate in the his activities, like the production of a movie . This aspects is good because, besides making Shouya face his past problems, it introduces lots of great characters. The side characters are great because they are all very credible and realistic, because none of them is perfect, all of them have or had their problems and suffering. It just makes us want to read more because, in my case, it made me curious and made me want to understand that character and what happened to him/her. Ueno is a troubled girl who suffers because by some reasons she despises herself; Kawai is an egocentric and manipulative girl but who hard-worked to get in her position, and for that hates not being recognized; Matsuba is someone who suffered bullying in the past and now expresses his anger mostly through violence when facing some bully; Nagatsuka is someone who does not have friends and who compensates his loneliness by being extremely energetic; Sahara suffers because she abandoned Souko in the past and because she tries to become someone better, but feels she can’t do it; Shouko’s mother is someone who struggled to raise her daughters, who suffers with the fact Shouko is bullied and who just wishes her daughter were strong enough to take it, although being too ; Yuzuru loves her sister and for that she also suffers when she is bullied and comes to hate the ones who made her suffer. Also, it is interesting because, with the experiences these characters pass in the story, little by little, they become able to understand and to accept themselves, which is a very interesting event follow.

About the lead, Ishida Shouya,. He is also far from being a perfect person, and that’s what makes him a great character. He is in many times insecure, in many occasions he gives up on what he wants/should do because he is afraid, and besides being his intention, in many times he does not truly tries to understand Shouko, he just “ intended to hear her voice”, which is a a great metaphor. Nevertheless, he is great developed. As the side characters, he learns how to deal with his defects and weaknesses, then seeing there is no reason to wish to die and being able to enjoy life .

Now to the most interesting character of the manga: Nishimiya Shouko. First of all she is a very interesting character because, for being deaf, her ways of expression are her communication notebook, sign language and her expressions. And OH MY GOD!!! What expressions she has and how well they transmit her emotions, because they are perfectly chosen and drawn. I couldn’t help feeling happy when she was happy, sad and sorry when she was sad and, most of all, feeling her pain when we come to understand the suffering she bears. All of that resulting in results in lots of crying. Also, she is the element which brings to discussion the heaviest and the most serious themes. Through her we see the suffering that accompanies those who are bullied, and how it takes people see themselves as burdens, to hate themselves and to wish to die. That is very well done because it happens in progression. We understand her like Shouya does, little by little. First, besides being bullied, we see her as a very strong character. Then, by the time of the climax (and what climax, my heart stopped for a moment; it just has so many feelings in it) we see her as someone who suffered A LOT. But then again, with her experiences and her interactions with the other characters(mostly Shouya), she learns to value her life, to see herself as more than a burden, to find happiness and to enjoy life. That journey of hers, through pain, suffering and happiness, is just so emotional I couldn’t help feeling empathy for her and, through all of it, loving her.

Then, I am going to finish this review reinforcing the greatest aspects of the manga, because I am pretty sure I said it by some point. This manga gathers amazing characters with dense, significant and touching themes and messages resulting in a very emotional piece of art, the most emotional I have ever read, I dare say, because if there is one thing ever present in this work is feelings, they being happy or sad feelings, reading Koe no Katachi will make you feel. That is why I love it.

Opinion & Informal

Art: 7/10
The anatomy and proportions of the human characters checked out. There were a few convincing scenes of nature shots. There were maybe one or two showcases of artistic skill. There were a few normal-looking wide shots. The environmentals and backgrounds looked a bit above average as they were a bit more filled and detailed. The impact shots were nice looking and did their job. The impact shot with the "Sorry for being a monster." looked creepy enough. The style was more realistic and leaned towards more real-to-life body proportions. Facial expressions were believable too but overall didn't feel too alive or impactful during moments of fear or anger. Overall, the art was good-looking and the shading and tones helped in setting the mood. There were one or two cases that could have been a bit better or used a bit more detail though.

Panel Progression: 5/10
The panel layout was about average. There were some tones that helped a lot in atmosphere building, but overall they didn't stand out too much as they were mostly used in select panels. The panel progression made sense and didn't create any confusing situations. The progression had a reasonable pace to most of the important bits such as the plot setup but it was a bit rushed regarding the entirety of the manga. There weren't too many uses of panel-cutting or anything that added flair to the visuals. Dialogue was at a nice volume; there wasn't too much or to little dialogue. Overall, the panel progression was just average as there was minimal flair elements in the layout or pacing.

Characters: 4/10
There characters were pretty lame and fit a lot of typical archetypes like the can-do-no-wrong nice guy, the innocent-beauty, etc. It was pretty telegraphed that the former two characters would be the ones to "survive." The character designs fit their personalities too which is fine I guess; I guessed that the nerd would somehow shockingly reveal a twisted personality. The character development was lacking because the characters were killed off as soon as everyone's baseline backstory was set up. Overall, none of the characters were interesting as their appearance basically dictated their personalities: The innocent-beauty with the sundress, the nerd in school-like clothing, the hostess in revealing clothing, etc. None of the characters had interesting development either. They just died off way too quickly.

Plot: 5/10
The plot setup was mysterious but honestly it was pretty easy to predict that a bunch of people would die and who would be the survivors. A more roundabout way of revealing the scenario would have been a bit more interesting. A remote and abandoned location, the way the invitation letter was worded, and the backstory to the visit screamed, "these people are going to die."

Development: 6/10
The development was mostly meh but I did like the twist. The twist was actually surprising to me. The twist regarding that idol girl was cool. The one part about the development I didn't like was that the characters who were being hunted down didn't have anything redeeming about them to feel bad for them. What I mean is that none of the characters changed at all from their middle-school days meaning that they ultimately didn't change for those 17 or so years. The bullies stayed terrible people for 17 whole years, seriously...The nerd pretty much only existed to explain the justification for their deaths. The nerd played no role other than to reveal some crucial information that would spell, "yeah these people are still bad, so don't feel bad for them when they die." People can change, but the characters didn't change AT ALL in 17 years leading up to their reunion. The nerd essentially existed to point this idea out. Everyone was so one-dimensional (especially over the course of 17 years) it's hard to feel any sympathy for their rushed deaths. This point is what I think made this manga fail in creating any sort of interesting survival aspects to the chases or their situation. The twist was the only good thing about the development in my opinion.

Conclusion: 5/10
Lame and left questions that should have been answered or not been made. The conclusion was pretty much that the two survivors actually died in the attack and that they were actually transported to Kiriko's world. The way this was executed was a bit confusing if taken as face value and I would have liked a bit more visual explanation or at least something that explained her world. How does she have her own world? Did that have something to do with how she materialized? Why did the nerd even want to send out the letters for someone he threw under the bus himself? How is it that the MC is able to interact with the people around him in Kiriko's world? I really wanted the how and why to the weird and unsupported twist ending.

Overall: 5/10
The reasons and explanations for a lot of the things in this manga were weak. The characters were weak too. The only nice things about this manga were the developmental twist around the end (not the twist conclusion) and the art. The monster wasn't really that scary or disturbing at all.

Koi wa Hito no Hoka Manga Review

Dated: December 28, 2019

Plot:

Is there a world we cannot see? Creatures living the same place as us, breathing the same air and seeing the same things. They, who we don't know suck on human lives in order for theirs to get longer. Living in a world like that is girl named Sayo who only have her eyes on his sick younger brother. After meeting the demon whom she exchanged promise to in her younger days, the peaceful life she thought they have will turn into a mess. The secrets of the past will be open, and the world invisible to the eye will be seen.

Characters:

Girls with principle and strong character is rare in any story. And that's what makes it one of those stories that I like. Her will to get powerful for her brother and her courage to fight even if she's in a pinch is just admirable. Added that she looks like Hikari of Special A. The most interesting character is the villain who is really unexpected.

Art:

I love how the arts were made on this manga. It was rough and not that polish, its background most of the times are only in plain view, but that is what makes it great. The way the mangaka turn his art into something soft and rough is cool. And what's make it also great is how the eyes of each character displayed the emotions, with exaggeration if needed, so that the scenarios make it more fun to read.

Enjoyment:

It would really be a great story if only it was longer. The origin of the villain, the twist of the story, the love story that has that potential to grow, has been limited since it ended right away. I do love how the story goes, and it makes me want to ask for more.

Ending:

Like most of the stories, the endings are where secrets are being revealed and in this case, it is not an exemption. However, there are those questions that will leave you hanging. Though its not really that important on the story. Or maybe, it's alright that it was left unanswered. But yeah, it will still be more awesome if this manga is long so that every case will be tackled and there are more thrilling adventures that can be read.
