Black Clover is a shonen (adventure) manga with typical clichés. Does it sound Naruto, Fairy Tail, Nanatsu no Taizai, One Piece etc.? Of course it does. The question is, does it matter?

Story - 7/10

As I said, Black Clover is typical shonen manga. I don’t read Black Clover because the plot is the best I have ever seen. It’s not mind-blowing but it’s entertaining.

Asta, our protagonist, has a goal and he’s working towards it despite having basically the world against him. Yet he wishes to become the Wizard king, the most reliable and admired person in the kingdom. No one believes that he will make it because he’s lowborn orphan without magic in a world where magic is everything.

Asta’s first step is to join Magic Knights who keep order in the kingdom. He's struggling the whole time unlike his genius rival.


Characters 8/10

I can say that I like most of characters. They aren’t deep but they are entertaining, which, again, I think is more important in shonen manga than them having multiple layers. Reading their interactions betwe

While most of characters are clichéd, they aren’t that bad or have some less than common quirks. Asta, for example, wants to marry a sister in the church where he grew up and despite being the protagonist, he doesn’t defeat every single enemy alone in the end after his comrades have been beaten to bloody mess. The rival, Yuno, gets butt end of jokes or situations that suggest him being gay.

Supporting characters have their own arcs which I like. Of course, after their arcs they became closer friends with Asta. Most of “enemies” aren’t really evil, which, again, I like. The mere idea of bad guys being evil for the sake of being evil is stupid. “Bad guys” can be redeemed too as always.


Art 7/10

I like design of main characters and all kinds of ridiculous hairstyles that some characters have. They look like typical shonen characters. Backgrounds are nice when they aren’t those action lines that symbolise fast movement.


Entertainment 9/10

I like this manga. It’s not material that leaves you stunned but it’s entertaining. I love annoying as hell Sekke who appear from time to time, stubborn Asta and the rest of his gang.
