Maou na Ore to Ghoul no Yubiwa review

tl;dr: A series that’s pretty by the book in most aspects and not a particularly good implementation in most ways but still manages to be really amusing at times.

This wasn’t bad and was reasonably amusing but overall felt pretty amateurish and generic in a lot of aspects. The overarching plot was the standard separate factions trying to get along but with those opposing peace on both sides, plus on the side a villainous group that’s supposed to be sympathetic due to all the trauma they’ve faced but still needs to be taken down. It was very by the book in terms of world building, and the twists felt like they weren’t really built up well in terms of foreshadowing, but were still incredibly predictable just because of how standard they were. It wasn’t a very good implementation of these standard building blocks either, feeling a bit too random. The smaller plots were also incredibly simple, mostly simply coming down to Black Tamers attacking them and them fighting them off. There was various stuff that happened around that, but it didn’t feel that substantial and was pretty random.

The main characters, Chiharu, Manami, Zonmi, Kyouka, and Iris, were pretty flat with not very strongly defined personalities. They all had character arcs with character and relationship development, but they were pretty much exactly what you’d expect upon their introduction, so pretty generic, and didn’t really make any unique personality traits stand out, so it didn’t help in making them more likable. The implementation of the character and relationship development wasn’t amazing, but was reasonably solid with most characters getting at least one really good moment. Still, that wasn't enough to counteract the other issues and thus in the end they didn’t feel particularly memorable. The exceptions were the little sister, Manami, who was hilarious and surprisingly the mother, whose personality I was not expecting at all as its pretty rare. The other side characters were even flatter and generally had no development, but also had some amusing moments.

The parts of the series that were the best were the parts that didn’t have much plot and weren’t all that focused on character or relationship development either, but rather focused on just showing off the characters while crazy hijinks ensue, which were incredibly amusing a lot of the time. The best example of that was the first half of the final novel. The last novel all around was actually the best I would say by a good margin. In addition to the first half being quite amusing, the final battle was pretty solid and quite a bit better than all the battles before it. The epilogue was also pretty much the perfect way to end things. So, all around I was satisfied with the ending.

The writing was so cheesy at times I wasn’t sure if it was trying to be satirical or not, but that just may have come down to the fan translation, which is funny in its own way. The fan translation in general though wasn’t very good with incredibly stiff and awkward language that didn’t make sense at times.  The art and character designs weren’t that great, okay at best.
