Koe no Katachi review
Second Piece: Koe No Kitachi Response

• Manga written and drawn by Ooima Yoshitoki

We’ve all witnessed or experienced bullying in some point in our lives, Koe No Kitachi handles serious issues and addresses the consequences towards them. This manga began publishing in August 2013 to November 2014. Both the story and art was done by Ooima Yoshitoki. The main premise of the manga is about how the main protagonist is trying to apologize to a deaf girl in which he had bullied during primary school.
The plot was very simple, making the characters and their interactions within the events that occurred throughout the story the main focus. The main character Ishida is a character who is a visual image of a “typical boy” when he is first introduced. I believe the author did this is so that the male audience is able to relate to the text and hopefully bring back some of those sweet childhood memories. When Ishida is first introduced he is in primary school. And as I said before I was able to relate to him with my child self, who always wanted attention and to be like by others. I remember almost willing to be able to do anything to gain attention, when reading the story I was a giving a very nostalgic feeling. Although some parts of his character was exaggerated, it helped the author find a way to keep the audience entertained, people don’t read stories just to remind them of the world they were just in. Ishida’s main drive throughout the manga is what intrigued me the most, and example of this is in one panel of the manga he is standing with a blank expression his face and the background is pitch black, with text around him stating his mind. The text said “it’s not enough, I haven’t been punished enough”, since the text is surrounding him with it constantly repeated, it shows that he is in some state of madness and has really reflected on his actions. He has a lot of emotions bottled up within him such as regret, guilt and shame. The author gives us a visual image of the faults that we as human beings have.
The second main character is Nishimya. Her disability of being unable to hear caused the early stages of her life to being more than just difficult. The introduction to her character was very unique, the reason for this is that in Japan when you first transfer into a new school you are expected to stand in front of the class to introduce yourself. Instead of using words she wrote on a little notepad which said “Hello, my name is Nishimiya. I am deaf, I will be using this notepad to communicate with you. I hope we can all be friends!” This heart-warming introduction was the author’s way of building up warm feelings toward the character. By doing so the author was able to trick the reader into thinking that the story was going to be a light hearted story with laughs and friendship, only to be crushed to find Nishimiya’s notebook had been tagged with cruel messages. The messages on the notepad said things like “ugly bitch, die”. This is very over exaggerated to what would happen in a real life situation, but this definitely made me as the reader feel sympathy towards her. On one page of the manga the author drew single panels in a collage like fashion displaying images of her daily struggles Nishimiya went through, there was a lot of physical abuse towards her such as her hearing aids being pulled out and there was also a significant scene in which the manga keeps going back to. That scene is when Ishida pushes Nishimya into the puddle. This scene is one that Ishida always gets flashbacks to since it increases the amount of guilt he feels. Nishimya’s mother didn’t want to forgive Ishida when he came to apologize to her, my favourite quote from her would be “would you be able to give her childhood back?”

The relationship between our two main protagonists was very interesting, even though they used a very common trope that can be found amongst many manga. It usually involves one or more characters conducting an action that would lead on of the other characters to misunderstand something, an example of this would be when Nishimiya was scrubbing a desk with hateful comments on it and Ishida happened to notice. Ishida’s initial reaction was to ridicule towards Nishimiya, but he finds that it was his desk that Nishimya was cleaning. Not only did the author succeed in creating a heart-jerking moment for the viewers, but also added to Ishida’s pile of guilt. This pile of guilt, as I said previously was Ishida’s main drive, it helps the viewer to empathise on his wanting to make things right between the two of them. This also gave depth towards Nishimiya, showing her kindness to her bully/enemy. A term I would use to describe her actions would be ‘killing him with kindness’. With Nishimya’s bery strong ability of forgiveness, I assumed that the rest of the story would be very short and boring. I was so very wrong. The author reminded me that these characters were human, by showing the viewers how the characters are still prone to the effects of stress and depression. The way he is able to illustrate emotions through his drawings is one aspect of the manga that I really enjoyed.
The most prominent scene in my opinion is the scene in which Nishimiya and Ishida go to a firework show together only for Nishimiya to try to commit suicide in the middle of the event, luckily Ishida was able to catch her by the hand as she tried to jump of a tall building and accidentally fall himself. The author used this scene to show that Ishida was willing to die for this forgiveness, as I have repeated multiple times, the manga is much exaggerated, but that’s what make the story all more moving and this scene especially had me at the edge of my seat. The author’s way of making Ishida pay the ultimate price for taking away Nishimiya’s childhood symbolises the intense friendship between the two characters.
Though the story wasn’t quite the romance novel I thought it would be, instead it gave me an extra view on what life is like with a disability. I don’t think the author once used euphemism for the things she couldn’t do and the pain she felt because of it. It gave the story a very raw feeling and managed to keep the reader entertained the entire way. It’s one of the more advanced Manga I’ve read, and the main target is definitely teen, as further support for this is that the main cast involves high school students. I would definitely give this a read again.

Ijime no Jikan review
Started off as an indies manga in 2014 posted by Kunirou-sensei in Manga Box Indies along with RULE~Crime Boy, Ijime no Jikan officially got serialized by Manga Box in 2016 after it gained its popularity.

If you haven't read the manga, this review may contain a minor SPOILER!

The story of this manga started off with a strong opening. As Ayumu, the main character, muttered in his heart "May I never be born again", he attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the school's rooftop. The first four volumes of the manga take us back to six months before the event. They tell us the story behind Ayumu's decision of killing himself.

In these four volumes, the painful experience of the main character was told in detail, started from the starting point of him bullied, the struggle he faced to understand the situation he was currently in, the blame he put to himself after (unintentionally) involving others into his problem, and the loss of hope after being trapped in a series of bullying game set by his own classmates. He was physically abused, but what's more is, he was tortured psychologically which is actually the common form of bullying in Japan.

In fact, bullying isn't special to Japan, but it is seen as one of major problems in Japan Education System where Japanese officials have put attention to. The nature of bullying in Japan isn't physical bullying according to Japanese researchers themselves. On the other hand, it's more about putting the bullied into the state of not belonging and helplessness, aka psychologically. This is portrayed really well in the first four volumes of this manga, and the author used many references in actual psychological theory to describe the changes of the main character.

But despite how well and detail it is in my personal opinion, some people may find these four volumes unbearable to read, especially the scene where Wa died. The bullying is also overkill, but I think it conveys the massage the author tries to deliver about how bullying is often just a game for the bullies and bystanders join laughing. The thought of the bullies are also rarely given in these volumes so they may feel one dimensional.

Actually, this manga provides many different perspectives, including the bullies. But it is barely presented before volume 6 after the MC finally took revenge.

While this manga may fall under "bullying-revenge" manga category, this is not a power fantasy manga to dominate bullies like most of "bullying-revenge" manga out there. There's no such thing as the MC suddenly becomes OP and beats everyone he hates. Instead, it takes time for the MC to gradually change psychologically and became desperate enough to finally decide to stand up and take weapon in order to get revenge. Doesn't it remind you to school shooting?. In addition, when the MC finally takes revenge, he slowly understands that even the bullies are just human after all. And the MC finally started to question whether what he is doing is right or wrong. But this scar the bullying is left is too big and hatred can be so scary it affects you not only emotionally, but also physically. Saying that, this manga takes a realistic approach to it's story telling which makes it stand out.

And I personally think that people who really care about bullying or practitioner at school -like myself as a teacher- should read this manga. Often, adults at school don't understand what's happening among the students until they are hit by a sudden bad news, that a student committing suicide or there's a school shooting as a revenge of bullied students for example (I never experienced such an extreme cases, though). We are supposed to be the place where students could rely on and yet we are often clueless of bullying and think that it is just a game between them. In other words, we passively join the bullies and make everything harder for the bullied student.

This manga presents three characters as perspective of teachers. Aoki sensei, a teacher who let bullying happen because he is afraid of the bully student's family influence. The female teacher who understands that there's a possibility of bullying incident happening unnoticed but won't try to do anything because she is afraid the students will be hurt if being accused, or the matter could end up being worse. And Shibasaki sensei who actively tries to help the students. The view of Shibasaki sensei is really rare to see being brought up in manga so this manga is really special to me as I share the same view as him as a teacher.

Tendo's mom also plays a big part in this manga. Research has shown that bullying is actually more common than we, adult, though. But we are not aware of it until the incident becomes more serious because many bullying victims don't seek for adult help in the first place.

Some readers may find that this manga's character as general is annoying. In fact, I can understand that view, but at the same time I don't share that sentiment. It's important to understand that people have different tendencies and trait. Reading this manga requires you at least to be able to be open minded to understand the character motives because they are actually presented and even explained in detail. But if you are easily projecting yourself into the main character or you are really clueless about bullying behavior, human personality and Japanese society, along with their collectivism then you are probably will be irritated.

Actually, I am amazed that what I find in this manga is actually supported by many research findings about bullying in Japan.

Bullying, justice, and revenge are the main subjects of this manga. And they are depicted in detail so it can be an uncomfortable read for some people. If you are easily offended by these topics then, I don't think you should continue to read after reading the first chapter because it will just get even worse until the last few chapters where everything sorted out and becomes clear.

You may think that this manga is full of negativity. While I agree that this manga depicts many negative things, this is a really well thought manga and true to reality for some bad bullying cases. More importantly, this manga actually delivers a strong massage about self-reflection. In the end, every character including minor character realized that bullying or revenge will bring only sadness. Bullying is terrible. It brings misfortunes to everyone involved and those around them and the parents are the ones more responsible to bullying behavior of their kids. That's such a strong massage from this manga.

Red Sprite review
Red Sprite - Sequel to Bleach (?)

Red Sprite (in Japanese, Redo Sprito) is a manga that started in Shonen Jump (SJ) right after Bleach ended, on August 29. By this, people had high hopes for this series and had hoped that Red Sprite (as a title) would become a regular series in the magazine. That didn't happen and so it ended in 15 chapters. Instead of a great/epic series (as main shonen series are supposed to be), what came to the readers was a series that was desperate for the spotlight and didn't realize its full potential.

The beginning of it all happens pretty much as other shounen titles, which is promising. Our main character Tatsu Frampt, a young boy who lives in an orphanage nowhere near the city, dreams that one day he will be the captain of his own airship and travel around the world alongside his friends, and this is all you need to know. And I know that there is a lack of new shounen adventure manga out there but this is not a good example, as something good enough to be reading inside that genre. I say this because this series wanted to catch the attention of the readers by adding fight scenes early on without any sort of character development and that's a great mistake (as being an error). Because this series was canceled, many characters were not developed or memorable, making it kinda edgy. I must say that the art was something decent but there's nothing special about it. The reader doesn't even recognize the author, even by other works done by itself (I didn't read Iron Knight so I don't count it). Without that, Red Sprite is even worst than we thought it would be.

You can tell that the author got pressure when making this manga and this is the result of a bad planning. As this manga didn't get a badass story, badass character, badass main character or even an ending who is not very explanatory this justify why it gets zero hype. It got axed and people knew this was coming so it's not a big of a deal now.

Story: 3 | Art: 4 | Character: 3 | Enjoyment: 3
Score: 3

Personal Note: I try many times to complete this manga and I didn't when it came out. Eight months later I finally did it but it was not my fault.

Infection review
This is an odd one. Some parts of it are actually very well done, like the bodyhorror and the tension in the beginning, the expressive art styl or the constant evolution of the danger, but so much else just didn´t work at all.

This manga tries to mix survival horror, with heavy ecchi elements, a highschool drama, light hearted comedy and a battle shounen protagonist in one story and fails so spectecularly with it that i just can´t stop reading.
We have emotional and dramatic scenes, that are built up for multiple chapters intercut with stupid sex jokes, that kill all tension and it´s leaving a tast of utter confusion behind every time.
Other times the cast is acting so irrational and straight out stupid that i actually can not stop me from laughing and i don´t talk about the discussions between characters in the middle of a zombie attack(and trust me these are so common here). I mean so stupid, that you wouldn´t belive it if i wrote it down.

The character are all over the place. Some are dense as a brick wall, some are straight out evil, others change their entire personality in just 2 pages without a reason, but if the character is a cute girl they will probably try getting it on with the MC. So of course nearly all female characters talk or think about the MC every time they are able to.
The odd thing is that you can actually see decent or even good written characters later in the manga, with nice characterisation and motivation, but even here they start to loose 50 IQ points the moment the MC shows up or something bad has to happen and that is the most frustrating part for me.

The story starts off as a more ore less classic zombie story and evolves over time into somthing vaguely resembling somthing like Parasyte or Sweet Home, just without the good writing to back it up. Sadly unnecessary highschool drama dominates even life or death situations for the most part.
To be fair, there are nice stories sprinkled in, but they are few and far between.

The manga is full of clichés, is unfocused, the characters are inconsistant, the story is somewhere between predictable and stupid and the dialog isn´t something to write home about either. I would never say that this is a good manga, but i realy do enjoy it for the very few competent parts that come to the surface from time to time and especially for the incompetent wrinting.
If you can enjoy something like this, you will probably have a blast with it, but if you expect a decent horror manga or something you can unironicly appreciate, don´t bother with this one.

Hi no Tori review
Phoenix(1956) is split up into three arcs. I feel like each of them deserve individual scoring which will be averaged to get my final ratings. This review will be as spoiler-free as possible.

Egypt Arc:
Story: 8
A look at an Egyptian power struggle with the Phoenix shaping history. This arc easily had the most compelling story.
Art: 7
Tezuka has his unique art style that is used throughout all of his works. This one doesn't stand out so I give it my default art rating.
Character: 7
This is the only arc where the main characters get much development. They are good but nothing special even here.
Enjoyment: 8
Didn't have the overall impact Tezuka's works usually do but it was a fun tale nonetheless.

Greece Arc:
Story: 7
The Trojan horse story(overused) in which Daia and Krav play a crucial role that is a pretty good read
Art: 7
Same as Egypt
Character: 6
After the first arc, the main characters reset and end up basically defaulting to the same characters in the first arc
Enjoyment: 8
This arc should have had an original story like the other two but it was the longest and had some good moments.

Rome Arc:
Story: 7
A very basic but kinda cool Roman story that didn't make much sense.
Art: 7
Same as Greece
Character: 6
The main characters reset again and don't really get much focus.
Enjoyment: 7
Seemed like there should have been more time put into this one but it was pretty fun

Manga Overall:
Story: 7
The stories, when read together, paint a picture of the lives of Daia, Krav and Chirol.
Art: 7
Art isn't something I almost ever care about. I will give it a 7 if I don't find things I hate or love about it.
Character: 6
The characters just didn't get enough focus outside of the first arc and they weren't much to brag about even then.
Enjoyment: 8
This is a fun trip through history. Not nearly as thought-provoking as most Tezuka works. Maybe if it got finished, it would have been.

Being unfinished, this story has a huge hole in it as far as closure goes. The characters are too pushed aside to be really good. Bottom line: This manga needed more chapters.

Opinion & Informal

Art: 5/10
The art was about average. The fills and space use were average too. The extras and environments were also sort of basic. The anatomy and proportions checked out. There weren't too many impressive impact shots or art showcases; neither were there any environmental or panoramics. There were maybe one or two cases where the art looked pretty good; the first death is the first thing that comes to mind. However, many of the later deaths sort of had really bland and tame art. This manga is a forced killing game so one might expect some gruesome artwork, but I really felt that this manga was a bit underwhelming in that department. It felt like a PG-13 sort of thing.

Panel Progression: 5/10
This area too was average. The panel layout and progression were about average. Pacing overall felt a bit too fast. It would have been nice to go into more detail or character development. The quick pacing detracted a lot from the intricacies of the sleuthing, the atmosphere building, and character development. As a result, mysteries were boring, there was no sense of anxiety or dread in the air, and many of the characters never left any impact meaning it was hard to sympathize with any of their death throes. The use of panel cutting wasn't used too much but it was nice to even have it in. Overall, the panel progression was very average.

Characters: 6/10
Like I mentioned earlier, the fast pace of the development detracted a lot from the characters. Before I could even start to think about liking the characters they were already dead. There wasn't enough time spent developing the characters to a point where I could feel anything at all when they died. The character designs weren't anything special too. None of the characters had any design points that made them memorable; none of them felt like that had any flair or substance to their personalities. The characters were also plainly written. I saw it from a mile away (chapter 2) that the nice dude who was helping out the MC was one of the wolves. The two things that this manga did well though were how they ended up developing the MC at the very end as well as how it was able to show how isolated the yankee dude was the day before his death.

Plot: 5/10
An average forced killing game that didn't really add anything to keep it interesting. I don't know why the killers were labeled as "werewolves" when no mention or point was made supporting the name. Why not just have them as regular wolves? Why are the villagers being attacked specifically by werewolves and not just wolves when all of the imagery used in the manga clearly showed wolves and not werewovles. I'm assuming werewolves are the mythical beast of a person transforming into a wolf...so why not go further and support that plot point? All the illustrations referencing wolves and the way dialogue is worded honestly makes it feel like just the regular old wolf, not he mythical type. I don't know, I feel like the author was very mistaken on the differences between the two and the nature of how the folklore actually plays out and decided to use the word werewolf because it sounded cool.

Development: 6/10
Again, pacing was too fast to develop anything meaningful in terms of plot complexity, atmosphere, and character development. Things sort of just happened and the dread and horror were kind of just happening to the cast; this manga didn't really immerse me into the how the characters may have been feeling. I wasn't "a part" of the story, it was more just me as an observer which is a minus to me. The one good part about the development in this manga that I liked was the twist at the very end. I actually did not foresee that possibly happening so I thought it was a nice touch. I'm just waiting for the sequel to get finished before I pick it up.

Conclusion: 7/10
The twist conclusion was good. If anything, that's the only "good" part about this manga. Everything else about it is really underwhelming. The conclusion was good enough to get me interested in reading the sequel.

Overall: 6/10
An average killing game where there were only two highlights in my opinion. The one impact shot showing how isolated and desperate the yankee was towards the end was very well done in my opinion. I felt it really captured a glimpse of what he was feeling; a thing that this manga should have been doing for every character. The other highlight is the twist conclusion. I could see myself recommending this because of how short it is and how interesting the conclusion was to be able to setup momentum for the sequel.

Abyss Rage review
Abyss Rage is an amazing action manga about a blind martial artist fighting to get his lover back. In case your wondering this manga has NO NTR.

Story-9
The story starts off pretty simple and fast, a young blind martial artist loves the daughter of a dojos head and she loves the boy. The boy has already proven himself to be worthy as an heir and the boy and girl plan to get married. One day however a man comes and challenges the current head of the dojo, he completely destroys the head and then beats up the boy almost to the point of death, the daughter goes with the man so the boy's life can be spared. The boy than trains for years so he can one day get his one love back and get a little revenge.

Art-10
The art is amazingly beautiful and clear, I haven't seen a single page that I thought was odd or nasty looking, I can't say one disappointing thing about the art.

Character-9
The manga clearly and properly shows our main character's motivation and dedication to get back the girl he loves. All the characters are shown to be who they are for a fair reason. The characters all have interesting personalities and make the choices they make due to their own beliefs and ideas. With every character we get a nice look into their past that shows who they are and why they ended up in this special prison and the reason for their determination to leave or just get stronger.

Enjoyment-10
Every fight and every chapter has been amazingly and beautifully done, theirs nothing I can say I find unenjoyable about this manga.
Overall-10
I feel every chapter just gets better and even more interesting, I hope you read the manga and you also enjoy it.
