In company-owned rabbit-hutch apartments live tenants who can't afford to live anywhere else, and the apartment complex in which high-school girl Hatsumi Narita lives is ruled over by the rumor mongering, self-righteous Mrs. Tachibana. Get on Tachibana's bad side, and life becomes hell. When Hatsumi has to buy a pregnancy test because her popular sister Akane is late, Mrs. Tachibana's son, Ryoki, who used to bully Hatsumi as a kid, promises not to tell the world about Hatsumi's secret, only if she becomes his slave. Suddenly Azusa, Hatsumi's protector in their youth, reappears to save her again! He's moving back into the neighborhood! Despite the budding romance between Hatsumi and Azusa, Ryoki has control over her through the secret that could ruin the lives of everyone in Hatsumi's family, and he hasn't forgotten who his slave is!

Hot Gimmick review
Normally, I would not take my time writing about something I abhor, but I recently stumbled upon this manga on the interwebs and it brought back horrible flashbacks. I did not finish this manga when I was in high school, but I still believe I have the right to discuss it since this manga should never be read entirely to begin with (I skimmed through some of the pages so I could know the ending).
Yes, this review is going to have spoilers. Continue reading at your own risk. It is better to wipe your butt with the papers from this manga than allowing your brain to read even one word from a page. Hot Gimmick is utter garbage with a female character that has the brain of a goldfish. Even as a teenager reading it, this manga felt "morally" wrong. The main character rarely thinks and is manipulated by almost everyone, from family to friends. There comes a point where it becomes hard to even sympathize with her even though she is almost gang-raped and remains with her physically and emotionally abusive boyfriend… that is when you know the writing/storytelling is awful. What really irks me is that this is a Shoujo manga. Mind you, there are probably numerous Shoujo manga that are trash, but that does not justify why Hot Gimmick should be one as well. I was a stupid teenager who read parts of it, but even I was smart enough to drop it. However, there are many young impressionable girls, so this manga should be flushed down a toilet before they can even read it. It is not worth the time or worth pondering upon. I know there might be people that do not care if something is “morally” wrong (what are morals anyway, am I right?), but this manga is also written so awfully that almost none of the characters are redeemable… not even the push-over/innocent main character. |

Don't read this. It's not worth it, even as a "it's so bad it's good" type of read, and, if you're the sort of person who was interested in the premise due to it sounding like it'd appeal to bdsm tastes: it doesn't get that far, so this manga isn't even that good for that.
If anything, this manga is a cautionary tale of what happens if you have no spine and let people push you around. A story like that by itself isn't bad and in fact can be interesting, however it's extremely tone deaf and almost insultingly predictable, it's a very typical "jerk guy and doormat girl," taken to its worst levels. It reads like a bad y/n wattpad story. If that's your thing, then you'll like this story, otherwise, steer clear. I will concede and say that the art is appealing, the character designs fit each character well. |
Hot Gimmick review
It's a little bit ridiculous to see how much influence one ornery woman can have on an entire apartment complex, but nevertheless, drama permeates every part of this manga. Anything gossip that is remotely scandalous is spread like wildfire and affects everyone's behavior; past relationships are brought out into the open and current ones crumble in a few chapters. Romance is fragile, complicated, and at times stupid and incomprehensible. Ah, but that's life, isn't it?
What made Hot Gimmick the most appealing to me was its interpretation of love. The characters attend high school and are not quite inexperienced but also have not experienced real relationships. Upon encountering these new situations and people, they discover the truth about love, that all those songs with sappy lyrics really do express romantic feelings at some point or another. "What is this feeling?" "Why is that that I want this person more than anyone else?" "This is so stupid, so idiotic, so asinine, yet my heart wants this." It was better in the first half of the manga, though. After a while it was annoying to see the same characters still struggling with their feelings, messing up, and hurting everyone around them in their efforts to come to terms with their own thoughts. But I suppose that just points out how love can be a bad thing when it gets out of hand. However, coming back the plot, the drama within the apartment complex due to previous relations and just plain nosy neighbors was absolutely immature and made me roll my eyes a lot while I read. It sounds like such a middle school thing to do and it's ridiculous for grown adults to take part in shunning a particular family for a rumor they have not confirmed, though even if it were true, it wouldn't be nice to ostracize a family like that. I do commend the mangaka for creating distinct characters, but character development seemed very slight for a few of them, especially for the main character Hatsumi. For the majority of the manga she was a crybaby who repeatedly denied herself her greatest desire because it was so different from what she wanted before. While it is a good thing that she is generally nice to others, that can easily be taken advantage of, as it is a lot of times in the manga, which I consider one of her greatest faults. The men in her life are Ryoki (a bully from her childhood who happens to be the landlady's son and is fearsome, commanding, and cold), Azusa (a childhood hero who moved away but came back later as a handsome model), and Shinogu (Hatsumi's extremely kind brother). They're quite an interesting bunch to hang around, let me tell you. As far as the artwork went, I thought the men were attractive, but the females, not so much. It wasn't because of the crying, but rather the women's appearances I found not to be as attractive as the male's. Their eyes were so big that they made the girls look childlike, and they just weren't as comely as the men. The manga didn't exactly end with a bang and I was more satisfied with the first half than the second half, I still thought Hot Gimmick was a pleasant read for that romance. There is a little bit of smut in there, but there isn't a whole ton and is actually kind of unnecessary. It may not be appropriate for people of certain ages, though. |
Hot Gimmick review
I'll be honest here: I didn't finish the manga. I just read what the library had and didn't bother to finish it online. Not really worth it since it's one of the WORST manga I've ever read.). But, sadly, I read most of it. I just really want to voice my opinion about this series.
(Warning: There is some language and some spoilers.) Story: 1/10 It's stupid, to say the least. I read it because it was there, but...ugh. I had low expectations, but the reality was worse. So, if you read the description, "Hot Gimmick" is about a girl who's 'forced' to become a rich guy's 'sex' slave. There are too many terrible cliches and unnecessary 'drama' throughout the series. But, I do admit, the side-story with Hatsumi's sister and their childhood friend was good and realistic. Art: 3/10 The characters were ugly and too many time the backgrounds were pictures of actual parks and whatnot. It's lazy and awkward to see these characters stand in a 'real' picture. Character: 3/10 I hate most of the characters. Hatsumi is retarded. I am not joking; with Lord knows how many times she's been abused (mentally, physically, and sexually), she doesn't do ANYTHING! We're supposed to like her because she forgives everyone and she's too nice. What a role-model... Then there's Ryoki and Azusa. These two assholes are...assholes. Ryoki is abusive and constantly tortures Hatsumi to be his 'sex slave.' But it's okay because he loves her. BULLSHIT! Then the mangaka wants us to feel bad and like Azusa. He has a grudge towards Hatsumi's father and tries to get revenge by (attempting to) gang-bang her. Then we get into his 'sob-story'. Hatsumi's sister is a user and an asshole (until her relationship with their childhood friend, she's okay then). But I said "most." There are two notable characters: The childhood friend and Shinogu. Both are really nice and I feel bad that they're in this manga. The childhood friend (don't feel like looking up his name, sorry) is good throughout the series. But this damn mangaka WANTED me to hate my favorite character, Shinogu. She did this by having him crush on his sister. I mean, I respect how hard he tries to ignore this feeling, but THIS ISN'T NECESSARY! Enjoyment: 1/10 Yeah. Overall: 3/10 Overall, I hate the story, lazy art, and most of the characters; while the only redeeming qualities were the side-story and the two characters I mentioned above. My apologies for the poorly made review, but please stay awy from this series. |
Hot Gimmick review
The very first time I picked up this manga, I could not put it down. I read literally twenty-two chapters in one sitting. It was amazing; there was never a moment when I thought, "How long will this take?" I never looked to see how many pages there were left, which is unusual for me. I am sorely disappointed there isn't more. There seems like there should be more than 54 chapters; it ended without warning. The character development wasn't what I wanted either, because much stayed the same.
Overall score: 8. Recommended: yes. |
Hot Gimmick review
I loved this series. The main male lead is so real. He is slightly childish as he still sees the girl as someone he can bully at first, but later on starts to realize he has a crush on her and lets her go for a while. All the while this is happening, the main male does not show real affection toward any other female.
The Main female is at first terrified of the main male lead, however, she later warms up as she notices that maybe there's something about him that she's missing. She is hurt by him mentally, but physically he never seems to really hurt her. She at first does not like the main male at all, but later finds him rather endearing. The Art is good, but not the greatest I have ever seen. The characters tend to start looking a lot alike after a while, all except for the main male lead and the male that is his friend. I loved this to death. This ended up being one of the most interesting love stories I have read in a really long time, and ended up being what turned me on to manga. I would recommend this to all people who have ever liked an arrogant guy or have ever wished for something exciting to happen to them. |
Hot Gimmick review
Alright...First of all, who would you choose?
The asshole who made you his slave and is just generally a horrible person, the asshole who tried to rape you for revenge but, just for the record, it was a total misunderstanding and he's sorry, or the really nice and caring guy..... who just so happens to be your (NOT REALLY) brother. Hatsumi made the wrong choice. She chose to stay in this situation. (Btw, spoilers.) Maybe it's a cultural difference... I mean, I get that women are generally not as respected as men, especially in Japan. But the main character of this manga is a total pushover. How did she fall for Ryoki in the first place? She admitted (even when she was supposedly in love with him) that she was afraid of him. But she never stands up for herself or fights back... she just lets everyone treat her like shit. And the whole deal with her brother being in love with her, that is such a cop out in so many series. They're not REALLY related. So it's okay! But no. It is not. She grew up believing he was her brother, so he will remain her brother. If your brother confessed his love to you what would you do? YOU'D BE CREEPED-THE FUCK- OUT. In all honesty, there was a part of me that ate this shit up. I wouldn't have finished it if I totally hated it. I wanted Ryoki to change or Hatsumi to grow some balls and punch him in the face. But in the end, neither or those things happened. Ryoki is still a disrespectful asshole, Hatsumi is still a dumb bitch and everyone is ok with that. Even her now celibate brother. I mean, really? Wtf. I don't have much to say about Azusa... he has issues that he projects on to other people... and he's an asshole. Hot Gimmick.... you're what makes me say "What the fuck, Japan?" (Along with many other, much worse, things) |
Hot Gimmick review
I don't normally write reviews however this one ticked me off quite a bit. A lot of the story is pretty good like the scandal between the families that happened 8 years ago and the brother not being blood related that's all well and good HOWEVER the fact that the main character was such a push over, got hit and thought nothing of it, takes orders from the A-hole like it's common sense....(it makes me realize how american I am) as well as the fact that the characters for most of the story are horrid.
thats all that needs to be said. |

Some Spoilers Ensue:
Hmmm...I dunno how I feel about this series. It's like a mixture of fan fiction, and Gossip Girl. Both of which I enjoy so from that point of view, it was good. I was entertained and strangely addicted even though all of the characters were terrible people (minus maybe Shinogu but I was weirded out by the sister/brother thing). It worked in Clueless, but in this series, the whole dynamic between the brother and sister bordered on creepy. The author also left a lot to the imagination. I was slightly annoyed we didn't get any Asuza aftermath...did he go after Ryoki and get his revenge? Seems we have to come up with our own ending a bit. I enjoyed the little extra about Akane and Subaru, but the 10 Days extra was terrible. I may be in the minority here, but I was happy she ended up with Ryoki. He was by far the most interesting character though he was so self centered and abusive, it's amazing anyone would choose him to be with. Hatsumi on the other hand was an absolutely terrible character on par with Bella from Twilight. I almost didn't want to read about her because she was so helpless. Also this series is the most rape-y weird thing (manga wise) I've read. I don't know if that made it more unbelievable or more terrifying. All in all, it was addictive and I actually liked the read most of the time, though I wouldn't put it on any pedestal. 6/10. |
